Your security file

Every sheet you filled in, your setup and the chapters you marked done, in one place. Export it as a file you keep, import it on another device, or print the whole file to keep with your important papers.

For a first pass, four sheets are essential: the device list, the account list, the recovery sheet and the numbers sheet. The backup sheet and the money sheet come with Backups and Money and identity, and the rest can wait. Your security file prints the file and sets the check-ups.

Never type a secret here

Never type a password, PIN, passcode, backup code, security answer, full card or account number or Social Security number into these sheets. Write where a thing is kept, not the thing. The sheets are saved in this browser and printed on paper, so treat them like your other important papers.

The export file is as private as the printout. It lists your devices, your accounts and the settings you turned on. It holds no passwords, because the sheets never ask for one.

Storage limitations

Browser storage is convenient and fragile. It is cleared when you clear site data, is empty in private browsing, is not shared between browsers or devices, and can be lost to browser updates or storage limits. Export a copy whenever you have entered something you would hate to lose, and print the sheets you rely on.

What is in your security file

Printable security file

A read-only rendering of every sheet, in contents order, for printing or reading through. Edit each sheet on its own page. Empty sheets are skipped.

Limits

The security file records a setup on the dates you wrote; it does not certify it. It is not a will: a legacy contact is an account setting, and who inherits what is a question for an estate attorney. Where a sheet records what a bank, a company or an agency told you, the record is yours and the answer is theirs.
