How long devices get updates
What each maker says about how long its phones, tablets, computers and routers get security updates, the end date where one is published, and where to check on the device.
A device that no longer gets security updates keeps working, but fixes for newly found problems stop arriving. CISA's rule is short: do not use unsupported end-of-life software (CISA, Understanding Patches and Software Updates). Your phone and tablet explains what that means for a phone. Makers state their rules in different ways. Some publish a date per model; some publish a number of years from a start date; Apple publishes neither. This table gives each rule as the maker states it, and the end date only where the maker gives enough to compute one.
These are the makers' own statements, read on 2026-10-19. Makers change them, and some extend support after the fact (Microsoft moved the Windows 10 consumer update end from 2026 to 2027). A date here is not a promise that your device gets every update until then, and passing a date does not mean a device stops working that day. Check the maker's page and the device itself before deciding anything.
| Maker or system | The rule as the maker states it | End date, or how to find it | Where to check on the device | Source, checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iPhone, iPad and Mac | Apple publishes no number of years. It says only the latest major version gets every security fix; older major versions get some security releases for a time. | Not published. Apple's security releases page shows, release by release, which devices an update covered. On 2026-10-19, iOS 27 covered iPhone 11 and later, and iOS 18.7.10 (August 17, 2026) covered iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. | Settings > General > Software Update (Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update) | Apple security releases, Apple deployment guide; 2026-10-19 |
| Apple repairs (not software) | Apple keeps parts and service for at least 5 years after it last sold a product, and up to 7. After 7 years a product is "obsolete" for repairs. | This is a repair window, not an update period. Do not read it as one. | Apple's vintage and obsolete list | Apple vintage and obsolete products; 2026-10-19 |

Check Software update on the phone. | Settings > System > Software update | Pixel update policy; 2026-10-19 |

| Samsung Galaxy | "Up to 7 years" of security updates, by model, since January 2024. Find your model in Samsung's lists. | Settings > Software update; the version is under Settings > About phone > Software information (Samsung) | Samsung Mobile Security, scope; 2026-10-19 |
| Other Android makers | No Android-wide period. Google says update schedules vary by device, maker and carrier, and to ask the maker. | Ask the maker, or read its own support page for your model. | Settings > About phone > Android version (the Android security update date) | Google, check and update your Android version; 2026-10-19 |

Google publishes each model's month. | The date on the Chromebook itself, or Google's per-model list | Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule | ChromeOS Auto Update policy; 2026-10-19 |
| Windows 10 | Support ended October 14, 2025. Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) give critical and important security fixes for version 22H2, with no new features or support. | October 12, 2027, if enrolled in ESU. Enrollment is free with Windows Backup settings sync, or 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time $30 purchase (Microsoft's figures, listed for reference only). | Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Enroll now appears here) | Windows 10 end of support, Windows 10 ESU; 2026-10-19 |

| Windows 11, version 26H1 | As above. | March 15, 2028 | Start > Settings > Windows Update | Same; 2026-10-19 |

| Home routers | Each maker sets its own support period. The FBI says end of life means no more software updates or security patches, and that routers dated 2010 or earlier likely no longer get them. | Ask the maker, or the internet company if it supplied the router. | The router's admin page, or the maker's support page for your model | FBI PSA on end-of-life routers; 2026-10-19 |
How the Pixel dates are computed: Google counts 7 years (Pixel 8 and later) or 5 years (Pixel 6 and 7) from the month a model first went on sale in the US Google Store, and lists those months on its availability page. We add the years to the month. "About" because Google gives the month, not a day. Next check of every row: 2027-10-19.
What to do with a date
- Write it down. Put the month and year in the "Gets updates until" column of the device list, or "not published" for an Apple device.
- Turn on automatic updates so the device gets every update until then (Your phone and tablet for phones and tablets, Your computer and home Wi-Fi for computers).
- Look again once a year. Makers extend dates, and an Apple device's coverage shows only on the security releases page. The yearly check-up in Your security file includes it. Our convention
